“Cell-free Chromatin - A Non-invasive Window Into Human Disease”

Nir Friedman has received the BIH Visiting Professorship in 2022 and is hosted by Nikolaus Rajewsky at the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology.

Prof. Nir Friedman is a professor at the School of Computer Science and Engineering and the Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Nir was one of the first researchers to use the Bayesian network statistical model to analyze the activation of genes. Using this model, Nir and his colleagues were able to identify groups of collectively regulated genes for the first time, along with their regulators and the conditions under which they are activated. Recently, Nir has developed a method for genome-wide assaying of circulating chromatin of cell-free nucleosomes (cfChIP-seq; Sadeh et al., Nat Biotechnol 2021). Using circulating chromatin to interrogate transcriptional states opens the way to bridge the gap between non-invasive liquid biopsies and the large and fast-growing data about gene expression patterns in tissue and cells in tissues and cells in different conditions.

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Il-Kang Na (BIH Johanna Quandt Professor for Therapy-Induced Remodeling in Immuno-Oncology) and Prof. Dr. Clemens Schmitt (Cancer Genetics and Cellular Stress Responses, MDC). The conference is designed as an integrative forum for leading cancer researchers and clinical oncologists to discuss innovative entity-specific and cross-tumor therapeutic approaches and to present the latest findings in tumor immunology and tumor biology. Die derzeitigen Vorsorgeuntersuchungen sind jedoch oft aufwändig und auf einzelne Krankheiten beschränkt. Wissenschafter*innen vom Berlin Institute of Health in der Charité (BIH), der Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin und vom University College London haben nun Blutwerte von 168 Stoffwechselprodukten (Metaboliten) sowie die Krankengeschichte von über 100.000 Menschen ausgewertet. So konnten sie mithilfe von künstlicher Intelligenz das Risiko für mehrere Krankheiten gleichzeitig berechnen und aufzeigen, wo sich eine frühzeitige Intervention lohnen könnte. Ihre Ergebnisse haben sie in der Zeitschrift Nature Medicine veröffentlicht.
